Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies Review

In the next quality, I was so obsessed with the 1978 motion picture musical Grease that I dressed up like a Pink Girl for Halloween. I keep in mind going for walks into my elementary faculty with my tiny pink jacket on my shoulders and cat-eye sunglasses on major of my head, experience like the coolest child in university. I only carry this up to prove that I’m significant about the Pink Ladies, but a lot to my dismay, Paramount+’s Grease: Increase of the Pink Ladies is not.

This musical prequel series takes location four a long time prior to the initial film, and follows Jane (Marisa Davila) as she makes an attempt to help you save her standing right after it was besmirched by the rumor mill surrounding her and her boyfriend Buddy’s (Jason Schmidt) right after university actions. She at some point backlinks up with other social outcasts like ascot-putting on Olivia (Cheyenne Isabel Wells), manner-expert Nancy (Tricia Fukuhara), and tomboy Cynthia (Ari Notartomaso) to test to alter lifestyle at Rydell Higher College for the far better for every person. Showcasing social commentary at times missing from the first film and a number of musical figures for each episode, this collection from Atypical and Clear’s Annabel Oakes reimagines the authentic film, the figures, and storylines in it for the modern day day—with small results.

Like most tries at prequels these times, Increase of the Pink Females would have been a great deal improved off if it experienced been permitted to just be its own different factor. Simply because, just on its personal as a ‘50-established musical collection that chronicles outcasts attempting to adjust the status quo, it’s not all terrible without the shadow of Grease hanging more than it, the audio is high-quality and at times even excellent, the characters are fascinating, and the series’ endeavor at engagement with the era is admirable. Even so, it’s just not Grease, and it’s worse for becoming attached to it. For starters, the 1st episode (titled “We’re Gonna Rule the College,” as all episodes are named following estimates from the movie) functions a selection of contact-backs to the original, but sadly, each individual of those people reminders just manufactured me want to change off this sequence and observe Grease in its place. The opening episode options various mooning gags, obvious homages to the authentic movie, but the joke staying utilized 2 times in the 1st episode on your own feels symbolic of these nostalgia-bait prequels: give up anything common and do it once more and all over again, with diminishing returns each and every time. Like the pretend film grain impact set in excess of this digitally-captured sequence, considerably of its homages and callbacks feel like very little additional than affordable imitation.

The musical figures within the series are entertaining, but the type of new music leans substantially nearer to contemporary Broadway pop (or a thing out of an Aged Navy commercial) than something resembling tunes read in either Grease or the period at huge, making it stand out the two in its “franchise” (Grease 2 incorporated) and amongst other ‘50s-lampooning musicals. Though, probably the most egregious way Rise of the Pink Ladies engages with the authentic film is in its most blatant relationship: Jane is Frenchy’s more mature sister. This tether to the unique film by an lovely middle college-age Frenchy is sweet, but it also produces a distraction that I just could not shake even though observing. How do the Pink Girls go from being these, frankly, nerdy outcast styles trying to make beneficial transform in the school and run for College student System President to the untouchable and unaffected interesting ladies allergic to school spirit that we see in Grease? It delivers an unavoidably depressing ending currently created-in: just after anything Jane goes as a result of and all the pals she can make and improvements she tries to impart, her tiny sister and her good friend Betty are nonetheless outsiders by the time it’s their flip to rule the college (getting a Pink Lady is however a radical act inside the film, soon after all), but they’re not inspired in the slightest by Jane’s endeavours to make Rydell a greater area.

Maybe worst of all is that so a lot of this series also just feels way too safe and similar to other teen dramas, hitting the exact beats we have seen time and time yet again. One particular of the Pink Ladies spends a greater part of these initially five episodes accessible for assessment longing for a preceding romance with a instructor, a single that she desperately wants back. It is a drained storyline that we have witnessed in much much too several teen dramas, and Pink Women presents absolutely nothing new to the conversation that those sequence haven’t now (at minimum so far). Even eliminated from the Grease of it all, Pink Girls is unimaginative extra usually than its creative imagination shines by.

However, inspite of all of its downfalls, Pink Females nevertheless has a whole lot of coronary heart and is extremely earnest in the story it’s hoping to explain to. When it does engage with features of modernization by its qualified prospects pertaining to gender and race, it in some cases finds a little something significant to say (even if the execution is clunky and occasionally preachy), and it genuinely is pleasant to see diversity extra to just one of my favourite movies. The leads are charming and pretty talented singers, and Jackie Hoffman is beautifully forged as Assistant Principal McGee. If you can regulate to independent it from the unique film (or, far better still, if you have never ever truly viewed Grease ahead of), then Pink Females can be satisfying. Nevertheless, with the shadow of the unique film casting extensive over each of the initial five episodes, it is difficult to sever that tie, even if it would be most effective for the clearly show to be consumed without substantially believed to what comes following. Grease: Increase of the Pink Ladies is a large amount of matters, but it is regretably not really worth becoming hopelessly devoted to.

Grease: Rise of the Pink Girls premieres Thursday, April 6th on Paramount+.
